Some apps detect browser automatically.
Let take Symantec PKI Client. It detects PORTABLE versions of Firefox and Chrome. Each time I start Chrome or Firefox, browser ask me if I want to enable some add-in from Symantec PKI Client. My browsers are portable, so detection mechanism is not installation registry based. This feature works for FF and Chrome.
Could be good FDM either detect browsers in runtime.
Next screenshot is such behavior in Portable FF:

Also Flash player is somehow installs into my portable versions.

Fiddler for .NET 4.0 detects portable version of Firefox, so can ILSpy its C# code and port to C++.
When I installed Skype - it detected portable Chrome and added extension button.
